Katherine's strategy

Fueling

Carbohydrate is the main fuel you burn when racing. Failing to fuel properly is a leading cause of underperformance in longer races.

"My energy was great at the start of the race and on the bike, but it faded throughout."
Our thoughts

Katherine aimed to consume 90g of carbohydrate per hour across her race at the IRONMAN® World Championships in Nice. She executed her fueling strategy well on the bike, averaging ~91g/h, and maintained a solid intake of ~77g/h on the run despite experiencing some sickness. She attributes the GI issues to her Crohn’s disease rather than fuel intake on the day and believes her drop in energy from 18km onwards was due to nausea. Despite this, her overall fuel intake remained strong, especially over the six-hour bike leg. She used a very streamlined fueling plan consisting of only PF Gels, PF 30 Chews and energy drink mix.

Hydration

Taking on board an appropriate amount of fluid and sodium is essential to maintaining blood volume and supporting the cardiovascular effort needed to perform on race day.

Whilst the absolute amount of sodium and fluid consumed per hour is important, it’s critical to consider these in relation to each other. This is known as 'relative sodium concentration' and it’s expressed in milligrams per litre (mg/L). How much sodium you’re taking in per litre of fluid is more important than the absolute amount taken in per hour.

"I tried to drink the right volume but my body struggled to tolerate it at times."
Our thoughts

At first glance, Katherine’s fluid intake was on the lower end of what we typically see in warm conditions across full distance races. However, the fact that she urinated three times during the bike and run suggests she wasn’t severely under-drinking. Additionally, her sodium concentration was likely sufficient to replace a proportion of her subjectively moderate sodium losses and support fluid retention to help her hydration status. Katherine would benefit from collecting some sweat rate data to help her quantify the difference between her current fluid intake and actual losses. This will allow her to assess whether she is experiencing dehydration to a level that could be impacting her performance and fuel absorption.

On the whole I’m happy with my nutrition strategy and the race overall. I stuck to my fuel plan and felt like I took on the right amount of fluid.
Katherine
Katherine used a simple strategy of predominantly PF&H products to support her performance and finish top 10 in her age group at the World Championships. This allowed her to effectively meet her carb target to excel even amidst some sickness towards the end of the race.

There is an adequate level of accuracy in the data collected and the numbers reported. The athlete manages to recall what they ate and drank including most specifics (brands flavours quantities plausible estimations of volumes). However there are estimations made within the data which affect the overall confidence level in the data reported.
